A heat pump is a central air conditioner with one extra part: a reversing valve. In summer it works exactly like any AC, absorbing heat from indoor air at the evaporator coil and releasing it outdoors at the condenser. In winter the reversing valve flips the refrigerant cycle, so the outdoor coil absorbs heat from the outside air (there is usable heat in air well below freezing) and the indoor coil releases it into the ductwork. Because it moves heat instead of making it, a heat pump delivers more heat energy than the electricity it consumes.
Two details matter in a Rocky Mount winter. First, when the outdoor coil frosts over, the system runs a short defrost cycle, briefly reversing to melt the ice; you may see steam off the outdoor unit, which is normal. Second, every heat pump installed here has auxiliary electric heat strips in the air handler. They come on during defrost, when the thermostat calls for a big temperature jump, or when outdoor temperatures drop low enough that the heat pump alone cannot keep up. Efficiency is rated two ways: SEER2 for cooling and HSPF2 for heating. Higher is better on both. Armstrong Air and Daikin heat pumps, the two lines we install most, are available in single-stage, two-stage and variable-speed inverter models, and the inverter models are the ones that hold their heating capacity as the temperature falls.
A gas furnace burns natural gas or propane inside a sealed heat exchanger. The blower pushes house air across the outside of that exchanger, and the heated air goes into the ducts while the combustion gases vent outdoors through a flue or PVC pipe. Furnace efficiency is rated as AFUE, the percentage of fuel that becomes heat in the house; older units run around 80 percent, and modern condensing furnaces reach the mid-90s. A furnace only heats. For summer, it is paired with a separate central air conditioner that shares the furnace's blower and ductwork.
An electric furnace is a different animal. It has no combustion at all; it is a cabinet of electric heat strips with a blower, the same strips a heat pump uses for backup, running as the only heat source. It is inexpensive to buy and simple to service, but it converts electricity to heat one-for-one, which makes it the most expensive system to run in this area. A heat pump's output falls as the outdoor temperature falls, because there is less heat in the air to move. A standard single-stage unit that is sized for our summers is comfortable on its own down into the mid-30s. Below roughly 35F it starts leaning on the auxiliary strips to make up the difference, and on a night in the low 20s the strips may carry much of the load. That is why the January bill jumps after a cold week: strip heat costs several times more per unit of heat than the heat pump itself. Cold-climate inverter heat pumps change that math. Their variable-speed compressors keep most of their rated capacity into the 20s, so the strips run far less. On a new install, that is the single most important question to ask about a proposed system.
The other thing homeowners notice is that a furnace feels hotter. Furnace supply air comes off the heat exchanger at 120F to 140F; heat pump supply air is 85F to 100F, warmer than the room but cooler than your skin. The heat pump holds the house at the set temperature just as well, but it does it with longer, gentler cycles rather than short blasts. If your heat pump is running constantly and blowing air that feels cold, not just cool, something is wrong: a refrigerant leak, a stuck reversing valve, or a failed defrost control are the usual causes, and that is a job for heat pump repair in Rocky Mount rather than a reason to switch fuels.
In relative terms, the ranking for eastern North Carolina is consistent. A heat pump on Duke Energy Progress electric is the least expensive system to heat with for most of the winter, because it delivers two to three units of heat per unit of electricity above freezing. Propane is the most expensive fuel here, and many rural homes in Nash, Edgecombe and Wilson counties heat with it because there is no gas main on the road. An electric furnace or an older heat pump running mostly on strip heat is the worst case: every unit of heat costs a full unit of electricity.
The numbers on the equipment label tell you where a system sits. HSPF2 is the seasonal heating efficiency of a heat pump; a higher HSPF2 means fewer kilowatt-hours per winter. AFUE is the combustion efficiency of a furnace, and a condensing furnace in the mid-90s wastes very little fuel. But AFUE cannot exceed 100 percent, while a heat pump routinely delivers the equivalent of 200 to 300 percent, which is the whole reason the heat pump wins on running cost in a mild climate. The exception is a stretch of nights in the 20s, when the furnace pulls ahead. In Rocky Mount those are a handful of nights a year, not a season.
A dual-fuel system, sometimes called a hybrid, pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace instead of an electric air handler. Above a set outdoor temperature, the switchover point, the heat pump heats the house at its low electric cost. Below that point, the thermostat shuts the heat pump off and the furnace takes over, so there is no strip heat at all. The switchover is typically set somewhere in the 30s and can be tuned to your gas and electric rates. The result is the cheapest heat in mild weather and the hottest, most capable heat in a cold snap.
Dual fuel makes sense for homes that already have natural gas service and an existing furnace flue, and for larger or older homes that struggle to stay warm below freezing on a heat pump alone. It costs more up front than either system by itself because you are buying both, so for an all-electric home without gas at the street, a good cold-climate heat pump with electric backup is usually the better value. A heat pump runs year-round, so it accumulates more hours; expect 12 to 15 years of service with regular maintenance. A gas furnace only runs in winter and typically lasts 15 to 20 years, but the air conditioner paired with it lives about as long as a heat pump does, so a furnace-and-AC home still faces a replacement on the cooling side in the same window. Neither system reaches its rated life without maintenance. A heat pump needs two tune-ups a year, one before cooling season and one before heating season, to check refrigerant charge, clean coils, test the defrost control and confirm the strips are staged correctly. A furnace needs an annual inspection of the heat exchanger, burners, ignition and venting, plus the spring AC tune-up. On the repair side, heat pumps add a few components a furnace does not have: the reversing valve, the defrost board and the outdoor sensor. Furnaces add the igniter, flame sensor, inducer motor and pressure switches. Both are routine repairs for a technician who sees them every week.
